if you take of the gradient, it seems like a good way to start pixel art, because the image is a simple isometric one.
but if you want to make a cube in different ways try:
for exemple, with 3d studio max:
drag object to the cene
press m for materials
pick material
drag material to the object
render
done
and of course you can chose the view you want, the size you want
and more advanced, the light you want, the way you render the object, etc...
simple in fact

You could also use the map object filter to create a cube in GIMP, but it's supposed to more specifically teach techniques rather then show you the best way of making a cube
Hmm I should prob write up a couple of tutorials on pixel art come to think of it.
